1. The frame - kiln-dried hardwood, mortise-and-tenon joinery
The frame is the skeleton. It must take the weight of three adults for ten years without flexing. We use kiln-dried hardwood (teak, sheesham, or rubberwood depending on grade) - kiln-drying removes moisture so the wood does not warp in Bengaluru's humidity. Joints are mortise-and-tenon at the corners, reinforced with glued corner blocks. Cheaper sofas use staple-joined plywood that loosens within a year.
2. Suspension - sinuous, webbing, or eight-way hand-tied
The suspension is what holds you up. Three common options:
- Sinuous (S-spring) - heavy-gauge steel zigzag springs. Most durable, best for daily use. Our default.
- Elastic webbing - polyester webbing stretched across the frame. Softer, lighter, lower cost.
- Eight-way hand-tied - traditional coil springs tied in eight directions by hand. Heirloom grade, 30+ year life.
Avoid sofas that hide their suspension - it's usually because there isn't any.
3. Foam - density matters more than thickness
Foam density (kg/m³) determines how long a cushion holds its shape:
- 24D - back cushions only. Sags in seats within a year.
- 32D HR - our standard seat density. 8-10 year life.
- 40D HR - firmer, premium tier. 12+ year life.
- Memory-foam top layer - 1-inch overlay on HR base. Premium comfort, no sag.
Branded showrooms rarely tell you the density of what you're sitting on. We print it on every quote.
4. Fabric sourcing
Our fabric library includes 300+ swatches across:
- Velvet (Indian and Turkish)
- Top-grain leather (Italian and Indian)
- Leatherette / faux leather (PU and PVC blends)
- Cotton and linen weaves
- Polyester chenille and jacquard
Each fabric has a rub-count rating (Martindale or Wyzenbeek) - we share it on request so you can match the fabric to expected use intensity. Fabric for offices and cafés needs 40,000+ rubs; home fabrics typically 20,000+.
5. Hand-finishing & upholstery
Once the frame is foamed and the fabric is cut, the upholstery team takes over. Cushions are zippered and stuffed to specification. The body fabric is hand-stretched and stapled with non-corrosive staples. Piping, button-tufting, and contrast stitching are applied by hand. A 3-seater sofa takes one upholsterer 6-9 hours from cut to finish.

Before any sofa leaves the workshop it passes a 12-point QC:

7. Delivery and lifetime care
Our own delivery team carries the sofa to your room and assembles it in-place. They walk you through care: vacuum weekly, rotate cushions monthly, and call us for any issue. Re-cushioning (typically year 5-6) and re-upholstery (year 8-10) are available at cost-only rates for Homsofadecor sofas, forever.
